Establishing a green financial system, which is included in the 13th Five-Year Plan, has already been a national strategy for China. People's Bank of China and six other central authorities issued the Guidelines for Establishing the Green Financial System. Green Finance was also the new highlight in 2016 G20 summit in Hangzhou. The sustainable development of green finance is closely related to the systematical reform of the capital market, especially the change of investment philosophy.    Click here for the details and registration.

China issues white paper on poverty reduction, human rights (Xinahua: Oct 17, 2016)
The white paper said China has made an enormous contribution to poverty reduction worldwide. Over the past 30 years since the launch of the reform and opening up drive, more than 700 million Chinese people have been lifted out of poverty.

China’s Sichuan to restrict new hydro projects over 2016-2020 (Reuters: Oct 19, 2016)
In policy proposals published on its website, the provincial government said it would ban small-scale hydropower development and severely restrict medium-sized plants over the 2016-2020 period.

China to encourage banks to help fund rural pollution fight (Reuters: Oct 24, 2016)
China will encourage banks to play a bigger role in providing the financing required to tackle mounting environmental problems in rural regions.

Green Bonds

Modern Land (China) Co Ltd Issues USD350M Offshore Green Bond (Bloomberg: Oct 14, 2016)
Modern Land (China) Co Ltd announced that it issued a 3-year USD350M Green Bond in New York, making it the first Chinese property developer listed in Hong Kong to issue green bond.

China’s State Grid Corp. to issue USD1.48B green bond (CarbonPulse: Oct 18, 2016)
China’s State Grid Corp. issued green bonds to raise 10 billion yuan (USD1.48 billion) to construct five high-voltage transmission lines that may boost the uptake of renewable energy from western China in the nation’s central regions.

MTR Corp issues first green bond (Railway Gazette: Oct 25, 2016)
Eligible investments for green bonds include works relating to low-carbon transport, energy efficiency, sustainability, climate change, conservation, water management, pollution prevention and noise reduction.

China leads global Q3 green bonds issuance (China Daily: Oct 26, 2016)
Significant issuances from Chinese banks marked a return of the pattern observed in the first quarter, leading China to account for 44 percent of global issuances.

Environment

What environmental standards should Chinese firms use overseas? (chinadialogue: Oct 21, 2016)
A group of eight Chinese and foreign NGOs launched the China Green Leadership: Belt and Road Green Development project. At the launch event chinadialogue asked three experts what environmental standards Chinese firms working overseas should apply.

Overseas NGOs in China uneasy about new oversight law (SCMP: Oct 22, 2016)
Overseas non-governmental organisations on the mainland are feeling growing unease about their future with just two months to go until a new law comes into effect giving the police broad powers to regulate the sector.

Majority of HK-listed firms slack on ESG reporting (Asia Asset Management: Oct 25, 2016)
Almost 70% of the reports disclosed all environmental and social policies as required by the HKEX ESG Reporting Guide. However, only around 25% were able to report performance on all 12 environmental indicators, in addition to policy disclosure on environmental and social aspects.

The Materiality of ESG Factors for Emerging Markets Equity Investment Decisions: Academic Evidence
(NN Investment Partners: October 2016)

Findings show ESG factors in emerging markets can lead to stronger performance. Emerging markets companies with a high ESG rating outperform those with a low rating on a risk-adjusted basis. Excluding companies with controversial ESG behaviour adds to overall performance as well.
